Airport Construction Brings More Air Traffic to the West End

If you’ve noticed an uptick in airplane noise in their neighborhood the past month, you aren’t alone and you aren’t imagining things.

On April 14, Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport began a major construction on one of its runways. As with most Minnesota construction projects, planes were detoured to other runways in the airport, increasing the number approaching from over the neighborhood.

The good news is the first phase of the construction wrapped up on May 23, just in time for Memorial Day weekend air travel to pick up and summer vacations to start.

With that said, people should expect more impacts for passing planes toward the end of summer, when construction is planned to start back up on August 18. The project is expected to be completed by September 26.

The work is restoring grading on one of the major runways at Terminal 1, as well as improving drainage and shoulders and reconstructing some taxiways for plans. They are also improving some of the safety areas for an aircraft’s unintended departure.
