AAA E-Ride Safety Guide

AAA Launches E-Bike Safety Campaign as Ridership Grows

AAA is launching a new public safety campaign aimed at reducing injuries involving e-bikes and e-scooters as their popularity continues to grow across Minnesota communities.

The “E-Ride Ready” campaign includes a free safety guide designed to help families understand how electric bikes and scooters operate, where they can legally ride and what safety equipment riders should use.

The initiative comes amid rising injury rates nationwide. According to data cited by AAA, micromobility-related injuries increased an average of 23% annually between 2017 and 2022, contributing to more than 360,000 emergency room visits and 233 deaths.

The campaign emphasizes helmet use, rider education and awareness of local regulations. Under Minnesota law, riders younger than 18 must wear helmets, and riders must be at least 15 years old to operate a Class 3 e-bike.

In St. Paul, where cycling infrastructure continues to expand and electric mobility options have become increasingly common, AAA officials said parents should understand the speed and capabilities of devices before allowing children to ride.

The safety guide also addresses riding around traffic and pedestrians, selecting properly rated helmets and understanding where e-bikes and scooters may legally operate.

AAA spokesperson Brynna Knapp said many parents are navigating a rapidly changing transportation landscape where safety awareness and regulations have struggled to keep pace with technology.

The free guide is available at sm.AAA/ERideReady.
