STAR House will reopen its crisis-nursery services in St. Paul’s Midway neighborhood Aug. 1, nearly a year after flooding forced the organization to close its original facility.
The nonprofit will mark the reopening with a family-friendly celebration from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 2. The event will include outdoor games, children’s activities, refreshments and opportunities to meet staff and board members.
The facility’s address is being withheld to protect the privacy and safety of children and families. People who want to attend, including media representatives, must request the location by emailing [email protected].
STAR House opened overnight services in late 2024 but closed after an August 2025 flood damaged its Macalester-Groveland location. Executive Director Sarah Ellefson said the organization used the closure period to secure a larger home and prepare to return with more capacity.
The licensed crisis nursery provides up to 72 hours of free, continuous overnight care for children from birth through age 6 while parents deal with emergencies such as housing instability, domestic violence, medical needs or other acute stress. Children receive meals, clothing, a safe place to sleep and trauma-informed care. The organization also connects parents with resources.
STAR House says it is Ramsey County’s only home-based residential crisis nursery. The nonprofit is hiring child direct-care providers as it expands staffing for the reopened program.
Ellefson said the new location will allow the nursery to operate more safely and serve more families. The celebration is intended both to introduce the Midway facility and thank supporters who helped the organization recover.
