Metro Transit Proposes Fare Changes Affecting St. Paul Riders

Metro Transit is seeking public input on proposed fare changes that could affect bus and transit riders across St. Paul, including commuters traveling through downtown and along major corridors like West 7th.

The proposal would set express bus fares at a flat $3 at all times and expand reduced $1 fares to youth ages 6 to 18. Officials say the changes are intended to simplify the fare system and make transit more affordable.

Public hearings include a May 6 session at George Latimer Central Library in downtown St. Paul, offering residents an opportunity to provide feedback before a final decision later this year.

Transit leaders say the changes reflect evolving travel patterns, with more riders using express routes for non-work trips. The proposal also coincides with planned upgrades to fare payment systems, including contactless options and fare-capping technology expected by 2027.

For many St. Paul residents, particularly those relying on transit for daily travel, the proposed changes could impact commuting costs and accessibility.
