Joseph’s Coat is seeking additional volunteers to help operate its St. Paul free store as the number of people using the service continues to grow.
The nonprofit has provided clothing, hygiene products and small household items at no cost since 1989. The organization typically serves 100 to 150 shoppers on Mondays and Wednesdays, or roughly 200 to 300 people each week. Joseph’s Coat reported more than 10,000 shopping visits last year.
More than 80 volunteers currently help keep the store running, but the organization says additional assistance is needed. Most volunteers serve one three- to four-hour shift per week, although scheduling can be flexible.
Available roles include helping shoppers locate clothing and household necessities during Monday or Wednesday appointments, receiving and sorting donations on Tuesdays or Thursdays, and answering phones Monday through Thursday to schedule shopping visits.
Joseph’s Coat describes its free store as a place where people can obtain essential items in an atmosphere of dignity and respect. Its inventory is supplied through donations of new and gently used goods, along with financial contributions from community supporters.

The organization is also planning its “Together, We Rise” celebration and fundraiser from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 8 at the Church of St. Peter, 1450 Sibley Memorial Highway in Mendota.
