Most of us don’t know Bruce Beese, but in community gardening circles he is a bit of a hero. Last year saw a huge increase in interest by people who want to grow their own food. Healthy food and healthy people are fostered in vegetable gardens. Some people don’t have the space or a sunny spot where they can grow vegetables.
Bruce stepped forward this winter with a plan, in his role at St. Paul Public Works. Working together with Mark Granlund of St. Paul Parks and Recreation, Bruce has identified eight marginal-use parcels of suitable land for community gardens. Fortunately for the West End, three nearby locations include one at Victoria and Jefferson, just south of the 35E frontage. This new offer by the city is a significant move in the direction of identifying productive use for unused city land. It is a win–win for everyone. The city relieves itself of maintenance of the land and gardeners gain use of land. Email Bruce at

Work remains to ensure the site will work and neighbors can support it. The site is very attractive with nice sized conifer trees and plenty of open sunny space. A delightful connection was brought to our attention by neighbor Joanne Craighead on Toronto Avenue. Her recollection as a young child during World War II was of a family that had a Victory Garden on the south edge of the existing railroad track right-of-way. If anyone has information, contact 222-5536. Gardening Matters (gardeningmatters.org) offers classes for gardeners interested in establishing a community garden. The next meeting is 6:30pm March 10, 974 West 7th. For info, email

The 2009 Golden Bloom Awards were awarded in January. Many neighbors were recognized for their gardens. First place Golden Bloom award was given to Highland Nursery. Stop by and congratulate Sue on her recognition award for the best business site landscaping in the city. |

Crime in St. Paul is on the decline and has been for some time. Despite the positive trend, we must remain aware of crime in our neighborhood and work to create a safe place for our families and neighbors.
