We asked the West 7th Community Center’s Summer Camp to write about their summer fun, in and out of camp.

This summer in the West 7th Summer Camp I learned how to do First Aid and CPR. I am now officially certified, and my card lasts for two years. My 4th of July was sort of good — I got a severe ear infection and my ear drum burst and I was in pain for days. I only got to set off fireworks the day before because of that. Jeffery Young

This summer I went to my family reunion in Jackson, Mississippi. I met more cousins than I ever knew about, and I had fun learning about my family history. I am very interested in genealogy (the study of family history). The first day we had a family dinner inside a very elegant hotel. The next day we had a picnic BBQ. We played games, had a Moon Bounce and people played cards. It was an all around good time. The last day we went to church and most people left that same day but we stayed one extra day. I had so much fun. Kajada Jones

I went to Michigan with my cousins. The best part was the Slip n’ Slide that my uncle made three years ago. When we do the Slip n’ Slide, the adults have to dress up as something. My uncle was Santa and my aunt was a nun. It was so funny.  One bad thing is that on the way there we have to go on a ferry boat for four hours. This year I did like the ferry because we were on deck and it was windy. The ferry left at 1:00 in the morning. We couldn’t sleep all night. The worst things about going to Michigan is leaving Michigan because it’s really fun going there. Anya Schindler

My best day this summer was a field trip to Grand Slam. It had games and bumper cars, mini golf, laser tag and baseball. We got tickets for a free soda and hot dogs. My favorite part was the bumper cars. I met lots of new friends, too. At summer day camp, we go on field trips and sometimes we do some community service and, of course, sports. I think this will help me more in school this fall. Jana Munoz

My summer was awesome. We went to Lake Elmo. The lake goes up to six feet deep, and it was deep for me and my friends. We went all the way across the whole lake. Also, me and my friends shared money a lot. Isabella Sandoval

I was a member of the West 7th Day Camp this summer and I also come here in the fall. I like the field trips, the snacks and the teachers. I am in a class with 5th through 9th graders. A couple of weeks ago my mom went to Seattle, Washington to see my grandmom. I had to stay with my cousins while she was gone. We had a lot of fun. We stayed up late and had cake, ice cream and pizza. I was still very happy to see Mom when she got back. Quabena Bethea

Things I did this summer are: go swimming, go to Crystal Cave in Wisconsin, and I got better at tennis. I played foursquare outside by the playground and I just started playing football. So far it is really fun. I can’t wait till my team’s first game. I went to Highland pool and I did a front flip dive and one time I landed on my back and it hurt. When I got out of the pool, I could barely see. I went to Cascade Bay on Monday and floated on the lazy river, and I got out of the tube and swam under the water. Armand

We would be at the field trip the whole day and when we went to the Bakken Museum of Electricity, it was so cool. Cascade Bay was so fun, too. There were six slides and a lazy river that you didn’t have to do anything but be lazy on. My summer was really fun, and I am not ready to go to school yet! Tina Randle

What I liked about my summer vacation was attending the West 7th Summer Program. I enjoyed the field trips we took to pools and other enjoyable places. I loved meeting my old friends and meeting new ones. I learned how to perform CPR and took a Tobacco Prevention Program. I learned that a lot of the stuff we have in our houses is used in cigarettes and that half the children in the world have tried cigarettes by the time they are 13. I loved the times my cousin Eddy visited. Pedro Morales

One of the things I did was go to my cousin’s apartment. To get there we have to take buses. The first bus dropped us off at the Mall of America. The second bus dropped us at Apple Valley. That’s where my cousins live. When we got there, there was a birthday sign on their apartment window because it was my uncle’s birthday. We ate and then went swimming. There was an outdoor pool and an indoor pool. The outdoor pool was so warm I didn’t want to leave. The indoor pool was freezing cold. After swimming, we had cake. After that, my dad came and picked us up. Estefany Garcia

I went to San Diego for a soccer tournament. It was a three-hour flight. It was really boring as all we did was listen to my iPod, play PSP games, talk with friends, and drink and eat. When we landed, the pilot wished us good luck. We went to the car rental. I and my friend were wishing we could have a Mustang but we got a regular car. Our hotel was the Holiday Inn. I thought it would be big but it was small. We went to our room. It was small. There was only a TV, two king-sized beds and two chairs. I thought it would be boring but it was fun, really fun. We played our soccer games. Our team’s little kids got second place. The u12 got second place. The girls got first place and the u15 got second place. It was really fun! Hennok Ghebeye

My favorite field trips were to Lilli Putt (miniature golf), Vertical Endeavors (rock climbing), Feed My Starving Children, Grand Slam, Crystal Cave and Cascade Bay. At the Community Center we did Tobacco Prevention, Second Step, tennis, movie day and water day. This summer I went to Colorado. When we were driving, we got caught in a massive thunderstorm. One of the bridges flooded. Our campsite was on top of a mountain. When we got out of the car, we were very light-headed. Before we left for Colorado, I had strep throat, so I was still recovering when we got there. On the first day, we went out for lunch. After that, we went whitewater rafting. I was nervous at first but when we hit the rapids, I was having fun. I almost fell out on the biggest rapid called Mr. Twister. Those were the highlights of my trip. Patrick Morrison

West 7th Crime Report

Crime in St. Paul is on the decline and has been for some time. Despite the positive trend, we must remain aware of crime in our neighborhood and work to create a safe place for our families and neighbors.
